Beyond The Sport With Sydney Segal

What's the biggest challenge in life that you've overcome?

The biggest challenge in life is never being satisfied. In high school, I ran track and cross country, where I competed at the highest levels and won some of the biggest titles. After graduating, I was mentally done with the high pressure and high anxiety I experienced with the sport. Naturally, I decided to run in college where I experienced it all again. There was always more for me. After I was done running competitively, I felt like I finally put the competition side of me behind me. That is when I did Survivor and felt the constant anxiety for the entire filming process. Post Survivor, I finished law school and took the bar exam. The perpetual stress for the 10 weeks leading up to the 2 day test was the worst I have ever felt. Right when I thought I was finished with these high pressure situations, I did The Challenge where every daily challenge felt like race day and the final felt like the bar exam. At this point, I gave up on being satisfied. I then go on to do my first trial, where I firmly believe(d) in my client’s innocence. Fighting for somebody’s liberty topped everything in “highest stakes.”

What motivates you?

Time. I know time is fleeting. I want to always capitalize on the now - the balance of enjoying the moment but planning for the future. The time is always now.

What's your morning routine?

I LOVE the mornings. I am a morning person - happiest, most productive, and sharpest in the early hours. I wake up, immediately workout for 45ish minutes. I enjoy coffee and some breakfast while reading or scrolling. Then I get ready for work, apply some light makeup, subway, and head to court.

What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about criminal justice. There are so many issues and nuance that makes every day a different fight.
