From CrossFit to HYROX: Why Everyone Suddenly Wants to Compete

Going to the gym used to be simple. Now, people pay to push sleds across convention-center floors, throw medicine balls at walls and run kilometers in between, all while thousands of people watch.

Welcome to competitive fitness, the era where the gym isn’t just a place you go anymore.

It’s something you train for.

What was once a solo workout has become a measurable test of speed, strength, and endurance. Competitive fitness gives athletes clear benchmarks to chase while creating an environment built around shared competition. That combination has helped turn traditional training into something people can prepare for, participate in, and compare on a global scale.

CrossFit opened that door, proving that everyday gym-goers could train and compete like athletes. Now HYROX has walked through it, taking that same idea and turning it into a global phenomenon with millions of participants and no signs of slowing down.

So, is HYROX just the latest fitness trend? Or is it something more permanent, a real shift in how people want to work out?

Quick Highlights

  • HYROX attracts athletes from multiple fitness backgrounds. A 2025 study of HYROX athletes found that 40.3% came from CrossFit or powerlifting backgrounds, 26.6% from endurance sports, and 16.9% from team sports, showing how the format is pulling competitors from across the fitness landscape.
  • What began with just 650 HYROX competitors in 2017 has developed into a worldwide fitness competition targeting over 2 million athletes of all skill levels.
  • HYROX reports that more than 99% of its athletes complete their race, with no qualification requirement or finishing-time restriction for standard participation.
  • An analysis of 34 cities that hosted HYROX events in consecutive seasons found that participation increased 118% overall, with 22 of those 34 cities experiencing growth of at least 100%. Washington, D.C. and Stockholm each saw participation jump by more than 330%.
  • Fitness concepts like New Jersey-born Alpha Fit Club are embracing the same combination of strength, cardio, community, and competition.

The CrossFit Blueprint

Prior to the HYROX movement, CrossFit helped change the culture surrounding fitness. Instead of walking into a traditional gym and figuring out your workout yourself, CrossFit handed people structure: programmed workouts, coaches, leaderboards, and most notably, a community.

Suddenly, a workout could be a sport.

CrossFit popularized functional movements and high-intensity interval training while creating an environment where people could measure their performance against themselves and everyone around them. That competitive element became a major part of its appeal.

But the functional fitness category is continuing to evolve. A new generation of hybrid fitness concepts is growing around the combination of strength, endurance, competition, and community.

No brand has capitalized on that shift quite like HYROX.

Enter HYROX

If CrossFit helped turn the gym into a sport, HYROX figured out how to turn that sport into something closer to a marathon. It was through trailblazers like Hunter McIntrye, one of the first HYROX world champions (he won three years in a row), to really turn the page and begin turning this event into what it is today.

The HYROX format is simple. Competitors complete eight one-kilometer runs, with each run followed by a functional workout station. Think SkiErg, sled pushes, sled pulls, rowing, farmer’s carries, lunges, and the infamous wall balls waiting at the finish line.

What matters most is that the format never changes. A HYROX in New York is functionally the same competition as a HYROX in London, Sydney, or Hong Kong. Athletes can compare times across cities, chase personal records, and know exactly what they’re training for no matter where they race. Think of it as a 10K with a lot more working out, and apparently, that’s exactly what people are craving.

Why is HYROX Growing so Fast?

One of HYROX’s smartest moves might also be its simplest: You don’t have to be an elite athlete to feel like one. Running a marathon can be intimidating. Competing in the CrossFit Games can be unrealistic. HYROX sits somewhere in the middle.

The workout is difficult, but also understandable. You can train specifically for it, compete individually or with a partner, and enter different divisions based on your ability. The standardized format also makes progress easy to measure from race to race. Athletes can track their times, identify weaknesses, and set specific goals for their next competition. That built-in sense of progression gives training a clear purpose beyond simply getting fitter.

Most importantly, there’s a finish line. That is something traditional fitness often lacks. “Get in shape” is vague. “Beat my HYROX time from last year” is not. The race gives people a reason to train, and training gives them a reason to keep showing up.

Then there’s the social layer. Race photos, training partners, gym leaderboards, TikTok videos, Instagram posts, matching team outfits.

The experience extends far beyond race day, becoming part of how athletes present their fitness journeys online. Competitors share months of training, race prep, and results with their communities, creating a steady stream of content around HYROX. Each post helps expand the event’s reach while strengthening the sense of community surrounding it.

HYROX has fused fitness with the same social identity that fuels marathon culture. Finishing one doesn’t just give you a workout. It gives you something to post about. That makes social media especially valuable because every training video, race photo or finish-line post extends HYROX’s reach beyond the people who actually attend the event.

Competitors introduce the sport to their own audiences, helping HYROX build awareness and potentially turn viewers into future participants. Sponsors benefit from the same reach. When athletes post their training and race-day experiences, the shoes, apparel, fuel, and recovery products they use become part of the content, giving brands authentic exposure rather than a traditional advertisement.

The Gym is Becoming the Locker Room

HYROX’s growth isn’t just happening on race weekends. The company has created an environment of gyms and fitness studios where athletes can prepare for races throughout the year.

This creates a powerful cycle: Someone sees a HYROX video, talks a friend into signing up, starts training, competes, posts about it, and three more friends decide they want in too. It’s the same community wheel that turned CrossFit into a culture force, except HYROX has attached it to a standardized global event.

Major brands have also taken notice. Puma, for example, has extended its partnership with HYROX through 2030. Amazfit is the official timing tracker of the whole event, and Centr supplies HYROX with all their equipment.

These examples are a strong signal that sports industry giants are starting to treat HYROX competitors as athletes, not just gym-goers. That brand investment is critical to HYROX’s long-term growth, giving the sport greater visibility and credibility while introducing it to audiences beyond the existing fitness community.

At the same time, partnerships with competitors turn athletes into ambassadors who can bring sponsors directly into their training, race-day and recovery content, showing why effective athlete marketing can help emerging sports build awareness and develop long lasting communities.

Same Playbook, Different Brand: Alpha Fit Club

You don’t have to look across the world, or even outside the Northeast, to see the same shift happening. Alpha Fit Club, founded in Westfield, New Jersey in 2019, has built its entire experience around the same pillars fueling hybrid fitness: strength, conditioning, coaching, and community.

Alpha’s 60-minute classes move members through six stations combining total-body strength training with conditioning. The other half of the equation is belonging.

Alpha calls its community “The Pack,” and that community-driven model has helped the company expand beyond its New Jersey roots. With 20 studios already open in New Jersey, Alpha plans to more than double that footprint up and down the East Coast by the end of 2026. Alpha is even leaning further into competition through the Alpha Games, where members can put their training to the test in a competitive fitness environment.

Sound familiar? Workout. Community. Competition. Event. Repeat.

Alpha isn’t HYROX, and it isn’t CrossFit. However, its growth reflects the same broader movement reshaping fitness. People increasingly want their workouts to feel like they’re training for something.

Fitness is Becoming a Sport Again

The biggest takeaway from the rise of CrossFit, HYROX, and brands like Alpha Fit Club is that people don’t just want exercise. They want goals, teammates, competition. They want something circled on the calendar that makes the 6 a.m. workout feel like it has a purpose.

HYROX has tapped into that desire better than almost anyone. The line separating “workout” from “training” is getting blurred every year. There’s a big difference between telling someone they should go to the gym, and giving them a reason they actually want to go.

CrossFit helped prove fitness could become a community. HYROX is proving that community can be a global sport. And if the current growth is any indication, there are going to be a whole lot more sleds getting pushed in the years ahead.

FAQ:

  1. What is HYROX? HYROX is a global fitness competition that combines running with functional strength exercises. Competitors complete eight one-kilometer runs, with each followed by a workout station such as sled pushes, rowing, farmer’s carriers, lunges, or wall balls. The same format is used at HYROX events around the world.
  2. Why has HYROX become so popular? HYROX hits a sweet spot between competition and accessibility. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to enter, but you still get the experience of training for and competing in a real sporting event. Add doubles and relay divisions, gym communities, social media, and the ability to chase personal records, and HYROX gives everyday athletes something bigger to train for.
  3. Is HYROX Replacing CrossFit? Not exactly. It’s better to think of HYROX as another evolution of the competitive fitness movement CrossFit helped popularize. CrossFit showed that strength and conditioning could become a competitive sport surrounded by a passionate community. HYROX takes some of those same ideas and packages them into a standardized race format that can appeal to runners, lifters, and everyday gym goers.

Leveling the Field: Equal Opportunity in Women’s Sports Sponsorships

Over the past few years, we’ve seen female athletes dominate the sports industry with win after win. Our AG athletes have racked up amazing wins in 2023, including Zoe Benedetto’s success at the East Coast Surfing Championship and Brittany Weiss’ victory at the CrossFit Games with Team Invictus. But even as women continue to show their strength and success within the sports industry, there’s still a lack of opportunities for female athletes to generate sponsorships and brand deals. Too often, companies who use sports to market their product do not look to women first.

Why Women’s Sports Sponsorship Still Lags Behind

While 40% of U.S. athletes are female, women’s sports sponsorship comprised less than 1% of total sports sponsorships back in 2020. In addition, female athletes received a mere 2-4% of media coverage compared to male athletes. This lack of representation could be rooted in outdated gender stereotypes. Sponsorships for male athletes are primarily influenced by their strength, skill set, and popularity, rather than their alignment with conventional beauty norms. Conversely, female athletes often encounter greater challenges, as their appearance can sometimes receive more attention than their abilities.

Gender inequality in sports leagues has contributed to this disparity, too. Lack of media exposure compared to male teams and lower salaries work hand in hand to limit the sponsorship opportunities available to female athletes. Recently, the Women’s U.S. National Team decided to fight back, filing a groundbreaking equal pay lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation. U.S. forward Alex Morgan explained that “as players, we deserve to be paid equally for our work, regardless of our gender.” Former team member Abby Wambach voiced her support, describing the monumental move as a “beacon of hope for women everywhere.” The lawsuit was settled for a record $24M just last year and continues to spark conversation regarding the obstacles women face in sports.

The Unique Value Proposition of Female Athletes for Brands

While the struggle for female athletes is far from over, there’s hope on the horizon. Increased media coverage in leagues like the WNBA and the National Women’s Soccer League has revealed the profitability within women’s sports sponsorships. With 84% of sports fans now interested in women’s sports, the time is ripe for brands to capture this growing audience. One unique draw is the inherent storytelling capacity of female athletes. While viewers are drawn to the game itself, they also feel a personal connection to the athletes and their stories. Brands like Buick capitalized on this connection during last year’s NCAA March Madness with their #SeeHerGreatness campaign. Each Buick ad featured a mini-documentary of a female athlete, showcasing her life achievements and inspiring others to overcome obstacles. The connections female athletes can create is motivating more brands to invest in stories inclusive to all demographics, not just the male sports fan.

Brands That Are Getting It Right

Brands are also finding success by weaving social activism into their partnerships with female athletes. Visa recently renewed their sponsorship with the U.S. Women’s National Team. In an effort towards inclusion and equality, Visa pledged 50% of their investment to programs supporting the team and other women’s soccer initiatives. This deal was a step forward for increasing support of women and closing the gap of injustice. Other brands including Nike, LPGA, Adobe, and Coca-Cola showed support by becoming a part of the Women’s Sports Club, an initiative dedicated to improving media investment in women’s sports. Adidas also took a stand against the lack of visibility for women by entering into the second phase of their “She Breaks Barriers” initiative, which included a film featuring female athletes and a call for their equal representation. Brands utilize these activism-based sponsorships as a way to boost their image, increase popularity, and bolster brand loyalty among women’s sports fans. It’s proven to be a profitable approach, as women’s sport fans are 25% more likely to buy a sponsor product than men’s.

How Brands, Leagues & Agencies Can Close the Gap

With this positive trend in women’s sports, it’s evident that overcoming obstacles in areas like sponsorships is becoming an achievable reality. As more attention is directed towards female athletes and their remarkable achievements, the barriers that once hindered sponsorship opportunities are slowly giving way to a new era of inclusivity and recognition. By continuing to foster support, challenging stereotypes, and promoting equitable representation, the future of women in sports looks brighter than ever before.

The Unifying Power of Sports: From Lionel Messi to CrossFit

In a world frequently divided by political, cultural, and geographical differences, sports stand out as a symbol of unity and camaraderie. Cheering fans, action-packed moments of competition, and the shared celebration of human achievement overcome barriers and foster connection. From the Olympic stage to a CrossFit gym, sports have the universal power to promote understanding and solidarity on a global scale.

Sports possess the unique ability to transcend language barriers and communicate shared emotions and values. When international athletes compete on the same stage, they are united by a common goal: to excel and showcase the pinnacle of human capability. Even in soccer’s English Premier League, where 63% of the athletes hail from foreign countries, athletic competition is their universal language. No matter where they are from, what language they speak, or what their values are, all countries are united on the field with the common goal of competition. Regardless of nationality, the pursuit of victory and the thrill of the game resonates worldwide.

As athletes and sports enthusiasts converge from various corners of the globe, they engage in a dynamic cultural exchange that enriches perspectives and broadens horizons. Sharing traditions, customs, and stories provides a platform for mutual respect and understanding among teams and fans. Sports can be used to promote cultural understanding because, despite differences, there is mutual respect and compassion for the dedication it takes to compete at the highest level. This was displayed recently among U.S. fans celebrating Lionel Messi’s transfer to Inter Miami. Americans took to the streets, waving Argentinian flags to welcome the player to the States. In a country where football is king, Inter-Miami saw their ticket sales surge 1700%. The Argentinian national’s move continues to bring greater cultural exchange to the United States as new American fans grow to appreciate soccer and the different cultures that comprise its rich history.

Power of Sports

Athletes competing on the world stage often share a similar exchange. Last week, American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson came from behind to clinch the world championship 100-meter title. Soon after her finish, she was greeted by two Jamaican opponents, Sherika Jackson and Shelly-Ann Frasier-Price. The two embraced Richardson and joked about their rivalry. Despite their different home countries, all three women bonded over the love and commitment they share for their sport. Through this mutual respect and understanding, athletes and countries foster relationships that bypass geographic and cultural barriers.

Sports have also long been recognized as a potent tool for diplomacy. High-profile international sporting events, such as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup, often serve as a forum for nations to unite. These gatherings allow leaders to put aside political differences and focus on the spirit of friendly competition. Sports have even played a crucial role in mending relations and promoting peace between nations. During international conflict, sporting events often serve as symbolic gestures of goodwill and reconciliation. The “Ping-Pong Diplomacy” between the United States and China in the 1970s is a prime example of how sports can pave the way for diplomatic breakthroughs. Until the U.S. table tennis team traveled to China for the historic 1971 World Table Tennis Tournament, the U.S. had completely severed its relationship with the country. The successful trip ushered in a new era of domestic relations, improving diplomacy, goodwill, and understanding between the two countries for years to come.

Power of Sports

Additionally, sports unite and amplify the voices of underrepresented and marginalized communities. Athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds often rise to prominence through sheer determination and talent, breaking down barriers and inspiring others. CrossFit athlete Dani Speegle exemplifies sports’ ability to uplift these marginalized groups. Just this year, Speegle embarked on a groundbreaking journey to Saudi Arabia, a country not commonly associated with women in sports. Speegle’s visit not only marked a significant step forward for gender inclusivity in Saudi Arabia but also symbolized the power of an individual to impact international perceptions. Saudi Arabia has been actively working to promote sports and physical activity, particularly among women, as part of its Vision 2030 initiative. However, cultural norms and stereotypes have posed challenges to these efforts. Dani Speegle’s visit to Saudi Arabia defied these stereotypes, offering a refreshing perspective on women’s athleticism and empowerment. As Speegle engaged in CrossFit demonstrations and training sessions with local women, she showcased her physical strength and shared her dedication, discipline, and determination. Her presence challenged preconceived notions and highlighted the potential of women in sports, inspiring a new generation of athletes in the process.

The impact of sports in bridging gaps between countries extends far beyond the present moment. The triumphs and struggles of athletes serve as inspirational narratives for future generations, motivating them to strive for excellence, embrace diversity, and work toward a more unified and understanding world. As young athletes look up to international sports icons such as Lionel Messi or Dani Speegle, they internalize the values of respect, perseverance, and cooperation that sports embody. In a world often marked by division and discord, there is comfort in knowing future generations will continue to have the power of sports to unite them.

Women in CrossFit: Breaking Barriers in Functional Fitness

This August, the 17th annual NoBull CrossFit Games went down in Madison, Wisconsin. Fans enjoyed intense competition and athleticism. Team Invictus, with our very own Brittany Weiss, won the teams category this year in a very impressive effort, making history by becoming the first team to compete in every event since the first CrossFit games in 2007. In these events, we witnessed spectacular competition and athleticism demonstrated by both men and women participating together on co-ed teams, displaying the empowerment of women to compete at the highest level alongside their male counterparts.

Why Women Are Elevating the CrossFit Movement

CrossFit is an amplifier for women’s empowerment in sports, breaking conventional narratives and promoting a culture of strength, resiliency, and success. This fitness regimen goes beyond physical strength by imparting empowerment in a number of crucial ways. CrossFit challenges the stereotypical beauty standards frequently linked with women in sports. Rather than focusing only on outward appearance, CrossFit champions strength, performance, and skill. This paradigm shift destroys constricting ideas of physical beauty and encourages women to derive their self-worth from their accomplishments.

CrossFit Women

The sport’s active and encouraging community is a key component of its empowerment journey. Women receive constant support from both coaches and other athletes, creating an environment that fosters their development. This companionship encourages women to take on challenges, celebrate their successes, and cultivate self-confidence inside and outside of the gym.

CrossFit’s Role in Community, Confidence & Mental Toughness

CrossFit promotes mental toughness, which can be transformational, as athletes push themselves through physical and mental strain. Workouts put participants through physical and mental strain, eliminating self-doubt and promoting mental toughness. As women conquer these difficulties, they grow deeply confident in their capacity to overcome difficulties, promoting empowerment in all spheres of life.

Helping to destroy gender stereotypes through its innovative approach to competition, CrossFit is structured to have women participate on an even playing field with men. Once a sport that could only be seen in the gym, CrossFit provides a stage for women to display their strength, endurance, and talent alongside men. As a result of this, conventional gender standards are pushed to the limit, and performance is valued above preconceived assumptions of what men and women are capable of. Women are dispelling preconceptions and demonstrating that their potential knows no gender barriers by taking part in the same demanding workouts and tournaments.

In addition to fostering teamwork and camaraderie, this co-ed competition motivates women to set high standards for themselves and pursue success with no limits. Women’s self-confidence increases as they see themselves competing on par with males, transcending the gym and affecting other facets of their lives. Additionally, the inclusive culture of CrossFit encourages participants to appreciate and admire one another, reiterating the notion that effort and commitment, not gender, are what determine success.

Breaking Barriers: Competing on Equal Ground with Men

CrossFit’s contribution to women’s empowerment is best exemplified by prominent female athletes like Dani Speegle and Brittany Weiss. Their accomplishments in this sport exemplify the transcendence of women above stereotypes and demonstrate how women can succeed in physically demanding sports.  Weiss took the NoBull CrossFit Games by storm with Team Invictus, competing alongside her teammates, with and against other men, ultimately taking the win.  CrossFit’s emphasis on progress over perfection is part of the journey to Weiss and Team Invictus’ success – cultivating a positive body image based on personal development by embracing personal growth.

Speegle has used her platform to champion her “Girls Who Eat” campaign, where she celebrates the female’s body, strength, and beauty. On the surface, Speegle is selling clothing. But what she’s really doing is channeling a movement of women who aren’t afraid to be strong. The success she’s seeing with this is a direct result of a massive audience who often feels unheard. Many of them have found solace in CrossFit, and Speegle’s forward momentum in this space has created a safe community for these individuals to come together and lift each other up.

Empowerment in Action: Female CrossFit Icons Leading the Way

In the world of CrossFit, women’s empowerment is illuminated through co-ed competition, where men and women challenge gender norms and compete on a level playing field. This inclusive environment dismantles stereotypes, fostering collaboration, mutual respect, and self-belief. By celebrating strength, resilience, and achievements over appearance, CrossFit redefines women’s roles in sports. The sight of women competing fiercely with and against men inspires individuals to break barriers and set bold goals – and bust through those goals. Through CrossFit, women are finding not only a space to prove their capabilities but a platform to drive home the message that gender is no constraint to pursuing excellence.

The Impact of Soccer in the US, and Its Continued Rise in Our Culture

Soccer has been steadily increasing its influence amongst the American public. This once-niche sport has made significant strides in capturing the attention and hearts of Americans. With events like the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the highly anticipated European friendlies on display, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup – set to take place right on American soil – the future of soccer in the US is shining brighter than ever before. As the world’s attention turns to the backdrop of many iconic American cities, there seems to be a yearning for a collective moment that will galvanize the nation’s enthusiasm for soccer, solidifying its place in our culture.

US Soccer

Soccer’s Cultural Moment in the U.S.: Why It’s Taking Root

Enter Lionel Messi. One of the most polarizing figures to ever step foot on the pitch, Messi’s arrival to the US to play for Inter Miami CF has revolutionized the way Americans will watch and interact with the world’s number one sport. The deal that helped coax Messi over from Europe will surely pay huge dividends in helping grow the MLS fanbase. Since he signed on, viewership has skyrocketed, attendance & jersey sales as well, and with MLS’ deal on Apple TV, it allows for 100+ other countries the ability to tune in and watch, substantially increasing the value of this deal overall. Technological advances such as the growth of social media and streaming platforms are creating new and easily accessible opportunities for Americans to indulge in the Messi mania. His impact has been seen early on with his debut for Inter Miami attracting a collection of high-profile celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, LeBron James, and Serena Williams. Attendance was well-worth the increased ticket price as Messi had a game-winning 94th-minute goal to secure the win. After the 2022 World Cup, the presence of soccer in the States is booming, creating growth amongst the biggest leagues in the US. With an icon like Messi as the face of the league, the MLS can begin to grow in many different avenues. This is a drastic change that no one in the early days of the MLS’ existence thought would occur.

How Soccer Is Expanding

What has always played second fiddle to the core four sports in America (NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL), the MLS has quietly grown and built its own unique empire within the US. After its initial rebranding in the early 2000s, the MLS changed directions to fit the styles of European soccer clubs worldwide. The US-based soccer clubs had names switched from the likes of the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny to more classic club names like NYC FC and Inter Miami CF. This switch helped further acclimate the US teams to the global standard of soccer worldwide. They also expanded the league overall, going from 10 to 29 teams, with plans to expand to 30 teams in 2025 – the hope being to eventually become a 32-team league. This expansion allows for the continued growth of soccer in cities across America, giving fans a new tie into the sport on a localized level. The MLS has made these numerous changes to keep pace within American sports culture, aiming to be seen in the same tier as the core four.

The impact that European teams and leagues have had on this growth can’t go unnoticed. This summer, America has witnessed some of the top European clubs across Europe come to the US and play in exhibition matches in front of American crowds. Clubs such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal, and AC Milan have all taken part in the Soccer Champions Tour, to give a glimpse at the excitement of European competition in the US market. These efforts have paid off, with the average attendance of these matches being about 55,000. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona set an attendance record in late July. The match was held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, with just over 82,000 fans, the record for the highest-attended El Clasico in US history. Progression has been tremendous this summer throughout the country, as people are all starting to take a serious look at the rise of soccer in the US.

US Soccer

The ongoing Women’s World Cup has also helped build and increase the exposure of soccer culture to the US. After the US Men’s team got knocked out in the Round of 16 in December, all eyes turned to the USWNT. With a third straight World Cup trophy on the line, a feat that had yet to be accomplished on both the women’s and men’s sides of the tournament, the hype for the women in 2023 was palpable. Headlined by stars such as Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Julie Ertz, all looking to finish off their illustrious careers by adding another trophy for their home country into the books, this event held a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the USWNT was recently knocked out by Sweden in the round of 16, their first time not advancing to the quarterfinals – ever. This shocking exit so early in the World Cup, is drawing national attention to the USWNT again. Many have speculated if they are past their golden era and if a rebuild is needed in order to be back in the spotlight. Talks have begun on how the talent gap in women’s soccer has closed and there is a need to change to get back to global prominence.

The Commercial Face of U.S. Soccer

Outside of the negative press surrounding the USWNT’s unexpected exit, the highlights from this World Cup have created major buzz in American culture. The Women’s World Cup has provided many worthy stories which help to garner the attention of individuals outside of the typical soccer audience. Linda Caicedo of Columbia became the first soccer player (male or female) to score in three world cups in a calendar year. Despite inadequate funding from their federation, Jamaica’s team made it past the group stages for the first time, and Morocco has made headlines with defender Nouhaila Benzina being the first player to actively wear a hijab while competing at a senior-level global tournament. The celebration of and discussion around soccer is taking shape in America at unprecedented levels.

The Future Holds for Soccer in America

As many tournaments and events in the soccer world continue to commence on US soil over the next couple of years, especially the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, the impact and importance of soccer in the US will only continue to grow. Messi has helped to pave the way for a global audience to be interested in the MLS, and the MLS followed by continuing their expansion and involvement in new communities. What is known as the world’s most popular sport outside of the States, soccer will continue its rapid growth in American culture. Five years from now, it is likely that  MLS and soccer generally will be of the utmost importance in our society. It won’t take away from what the core four has built, but will add a completely new element to sports culture in the US. The love and compassion of clubs’ fan bases abroad will echo into America’s foundation for support of the game and the impact it will have on our society will be one that continues to enhance the rise of soccer culture in the US.

The Real NFL Pros Don’t Wear Helmets

The NFL dominates the U.S. sports industry and is one of the most valuable sports organizations in the world. America’s love for the game feeds this power, but over the past six years, changes in the NFL’s marketing strategy have propelled success. An organization that was once fueled by older generations became an industry for everyone through social media and the NFL’s “helmets off” approach.

Looking back at early versions of Madden NFL, a football player always graced the cover wearing his shiny helmet and famous uniform. They were often shadowed, with dark backgrounds, and centered around the NFL logo. In 2018, the NFL hired Tim Ellis as their new Chief Marketing Officer, and up until that point, most of the NFL advertising and partnerships were marketed just like that Madden NFL cover. When Tim Ellis stepped in, he brought the NFL’s marketing strategy personality, humor, and emotion. Fast forward to Madden NFL 18 – the cover looks a little different. Tom Brady is holding his helmet staring intently. The keyword here: holding. Madden NFL 18 was the first of the series where the player on the cover was not wearing their helmet. Tim Ellis calls this the “helmets off” approach – a step towards reaching a younger fan base.

NFL Helmets

At the time of his entrance into the role, the NFL audience was dominated by people ages 35+. Ellis’ goal was to tap into and capture the younger audience. The players and faces of the NFL were necessary for this goal, showcasing personalities in a multitude of ways in an effort to grow the NFL community. Players were tasked with creating behind-the-scenes videos of game days, locker room activities, or anything else they could think of. The relaxed, personal vibe of these videos drew people in. Players started earning followings for their humor, personality, and hobbies – ultimately leading to more authentic partnership opportunities. The now-retired Rob Gronkowski is the gold example of how the “helmets off” approach benefits players. Gronkowski’s fan base soared once fans got to know the man under the helmet. With a now booming presence on TikTok and Instagram, he became a favorite of the younger generation and still exists as a face of football regardless of his retirement, appearing in commercials for Dunkin’, ESPN, FootLocker, and more. The “helmets off” approach allows players to create a personal brand that will last beyond the NFL.

NFL Helmets

It was clear that the changes Ellis made were working, but during and after the pandemic, his strategy brought the NFL’s numbers higher than ever. Since the year 2000, revenues have been on a steady incline with the exception of 2020. Despite a dramatic decrease of $3 billion in revenue to a yearly total of $12 billion due to the global pandemic, the “helmet’s off” approach and social media were key in the incredible climb to $17 billion in revenue in 2021. The NFL marketing and social media teams took this time to hone in on their “helmets off” approach and let the world see life inside of the NFL. The public was craving personal relationships and interactions and the NFL provided this experience across all platforms. This achieved Ellis’ goal of expanding, especially to a younger audience. A 2021 stat showed that of Snapchat Highlight viewers alone, 70% were aged 24 years or younger which was 38% more than the year prior. They also reached a larger audience on Instagram for Kickoff Sunday 2021 beating 2020 by 91%.

Tim Ellis and his introduction of the “helmet’s off” approach proved highly successful. At the end of 2022, the NFL saw a total revenue of $18 billion placing the organization $8 billion ahead of the MLB. If other sports organizations want to continue to grow as rapidly, and continuously, they should take their helmets off and pay attention to the playbook Tim Ellis is writing.

The Greatest Show on Dirt: A New Brand of Baseball

“America’s Pastime,” for many reasons, earned its illustrious nickname because there are truly few things comparable to a midsummer baseball game. The 7th-inning stretch, endless food and drinks, and all the mid-inning festivities make the experience unlike any other. With over 150 years of the sport, would it be possible to reinvent the game to make it more enjoyable? Enter a team from southern Georgia, the show-stopping, incredibly entertaining Savannah Bananas. Breaking the barriers of traditional baseball, this revolutionary franchise plays its own brand of baseball because they want to be different. Enter Banana Ball. From players on towering stilts to flaming bats and balls, a night at their ballpark is an unforgettable experience. The Bananas have committed the game and experience to their fans by taking a “Fans First, Entertain Always” approach, which has not only revitalized the classic game of baseball but has reached into an untapped demographic of both young and old fans, growing the game and reminding their fans of their ultimate goal: to make baseball more fun.

Banana Ball

Before becoming a social media sensation and a must-see experience, the Bananas played in the Coastal Plain League, a wood-bat collegiate summer baseball league. They played in this league from 2016 to 2022, winning multiple championships while slowly incorporating their own playing style and growing their online presence. The franchise soon made its exit from the league in 2023 and has spent this summer on their Banana Ball World Tour, attempting to play 70 games across 33 cities in 21 states with their counterpart show team, the Savannah Party Animals. When purchasing the team in 2015, owner Jesse Cole could not have even imagined the entertainment powerhouse he’s turned the Savannah Bananas into. Splurging hundreds of thousands of dollars and putting themselves in debt, Jesse and his wife Emily took a leap of faith, hoping that something would click. The Savannah Bananas were born when the duo crowdsourced for a new team name. Following this rebranding, the team’s outlook took a turn for the better, becoming more attractive to fans while becoming an incredibly profitable goldmine. Sporting his signature yellow tuxedo and top hat, Jesse has become an icon that symbolizes the charismatic and lively nature of the Bananas.

From barely making ends meet to being the head of the dragon of this admirable franchise, Jesse’s vision of putting the fans first makes the team such a hit. By daring to take the path less traveled and persevering where others fail, he is a mastermind marketer who knows which hands his product needs to go into. “If you’re not being criticized, you’re playing it too safe,” says Emily, who credits the growth of the Bananas to Jesse and his risk-taking behavior. Receiving national attention on social media for their unique play, the team has since garnered millions of views and followers across TikTok, Instagram, and all other social media platforms. With tickets yielding a hefty price tag and a waitlist nearing 1 million fans, entering the 4,000-seat Grayson Stadium will leave fans feeling like VIPs. The stadium is one-of-a-kind, becoming the first professional stadium to become completely ad-free since sponsors began placing billboards in venues more than a century ago. The mission is to serve the fans in a better way instead of capitalizing on their supporters, and where others see ads as a stream of revenue, the Bananas see it as a distraction and want to capture the full attention of the fans. Now classified as an independent team and presumably their own business, Banana Ball has endless opportunities for growth.

Banana Ball

For those just learning about this team, many ask the same question: what in the world is Banana Ball? As the “Harlem Globetrotters” of baseball, Jesse Cole bought his team with the intent of making the game faster and more attractive to fans. Similar to the MLB and the pitch clock implementation for the 2023 season, the Savannah Bananas set a limit of two hours of playing time. American baseball has been planning a change in the pace of play for years, originally tested out in the minor leagues before making its way to the big leagues. MLB games are on average, thirty minutes faster, along with total attendance projected to reach near record-highs. Baseball may have cracked the code to gain more popularity, and the numbers have shown.

“Banana Ball” is the name of the game, consisting of nine unique rules that eliminate any downtime and give the fans more of what they want with less idle time and more fun. By altering the game’s standard rules, the Bananas want zero stoppage in play. From prohibiting mound visits and batter time-outs to no walks and bunts, the game is far from ordinary. The most exciting rule which literally brings fans into the game is that every foul ball that a fan catches will be counted as an out. The team has also completely wiped out traditional scoring and instead implements a point system that rewards one point for the team that scores the most runs in that given inning. If the game is tied after the two-hour mark, the teams square off in a bizarre “Showdown Tiebreaker” with the goal of scoring a walk-off run. Singing, dancing, and stunts performed by the players are all a part of what gives this next-level experience non-stop action.

In what Jesse Cole labels as “The Greatest Show in Sports,” the players, as much as the fans, discovered a newfound joy for baseball. His players come from vastly different backgrounds, from former high school and college players to MLB draft picks who have been given a second chance with the Savannah Bananas. Jackson Olson, a member of the Savannah Bananas and one of their most notable TikTok personalities, finished his career playing college ball at Stetson University before Jesse and co. took a chance on him. Other players, such as Bill Leroy, are thankful for the opportunity to give back to the community and provide experiences they never had in their childhoods. This gives fans every reason to show out and support the boys down in Bananaland, and with sights set on the future, Jesse and his squad are ready to reach new heights and show the rest of the world what Banana Ball is all about.

SlamBall Makes a Comeback in Highly Anticipated Las Vegas Debut

SlamBall, once popular in the early 2000s, is making a grand comeback this summer 2023 in Las Vegas. Considered a sport ahead of its time, the demand for its return has swept across social media, with the hashtag #BringBackSlamBall garnering over 200 million views, according to ESPN. Targeting a younger audience, social media is facilitating in-game highlights and more for fans. With a breath of fresh air instilled in this beloved sport, there is immense excitement to see SlamBall take off again.

Created by Mason Gordon, SlamBall was wildly popular in 2002. It originally aired on The National Network, which later became known as Spike TV, airing for two seasons before the league disbanded due to a disagreement between Gordon and the network partner. It briefly returned in 2008, but only stuck around for one season and has not been seen since. The contact sport is played by 4 players on each team resembling basketball, but is played on 4 trampolines with a 20 minute time limit. Blocks, collisions and rough physical play are a legal part of the game, similar to elements of American football and ice hockey.

In order to return to the arena, SlamBall completed an $11 million Series A funding round led by Roger Ehrenberg’s IA Sports Ventures and Eberg Capital. Some investors and partners that were included in this deal were the likes of David Blitzer, co-founder of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, David Adelman, co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, Michael Rubin, CEO of Fanatics, Gary Vaynerchuk, Entrepreneur, and Blake Griffin, Boston Celtics power forward and six-time NBA All-Star. Now that the capital was raised, SlamBall needed to be seen.

SlamBall 2023

In a strategic move, the SlamBall league has relocated its operations to Las Vegas, a city known for sports, entertainment, gambling and mind blowing spectacles. This move will have a significant positive financial impact on the league. Tapping into the Vegas tourism industry by hosting live SlamBall tournaments, this adrenaline filled sport is guaranteed to have people paying for their seats. The influx of visitors attending SlamBall matches is projected to boost ticket sales, drive merchandise revenue, and attract potential investors.

SlamBall has joined with media giant, ESPN, ensuring widespread coverage and exposure for the sport. On July 21 from 7-9 p.m. EDT, SlamBall returns live from Las Vegas. Over five evenings and weekends ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+ will broadcast more than 30 hours of live SlamBall coverage, with the SlamBall Playoffs and SlamBall Championship Game taking place from August 17–19. Ticket sales will start on June 27 and all games will be played at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. ESPN’s vast networks will provide unparalleled access for SlamBall’s premier matches to reach a global audience.

Through this partnership, viewers can expect extensive live coverage of games, highlights, analysis, and engaging storytelling showcasing the sport. The collaboration with ESPN elevates SlamBall and puts it as a top sporting event.  According to Gordon, “SlamBall just kind of fits the bill. They’re 20-minute games, television half hours,” Gordon added. “People always really gravitated to the action, and it’s this incredible mash-up between basketball, football, hockey, little bit of gymnastics, little bit of video games. That’s just SlamBall, you get a whole lot in one neat, tidy little package.”

As SlamBall reinvents itself, it promises to dazzle audiences worldwide, and tap into a whole new area of sports and entertainment. This, without a doubt, will generate a whole new group of athletes and fans. The comeback of SlamBall is a testament to the unwavering spirit of innovation and the power of collaboration within the sports industry.

The Refurbished US Open of Surfing

Dating back to 1959, the historic site of Huntington Beach, CA, has been used to create a unique surfing competition that brings surfers and fans from around the world to one location. This event determines which surfers have what it takes to qualify for the World Surf League (WSL). Through the years, the competition has created significant moments in WSL history and ultimately allowed the world of surfing to grow exponentially. The competition was rebranded over the years, and finally, in 1996, it became the prominent US Open of Surfing. As the US Open approaches, the WSL decided to spice things up and change the overall fan experience to benefit all fans who step foot onto the beach. With a record-breaking attendance at Huntington Beach last year, the WSL wants to continue growing its market to open up the surfing world to everyone. With many historic moments, competitions, and sponsors, the WSL and Huntington Beach want to create a competition that will impact the overall future of surfing.

Wallex Headlines the Event

For the past 10 years, the US Open of Surfing used the shoe company Vans to promote and gain traction within their community. Vans has historically worked with niche sports, which allowed them to foster a unique relationship with the US Open of Surfing and its small community.  Although Vans and the US Open collaborated positively over those 10 years, the WSL decided it was time to implement a new sponsor that would open the world of surfing to a different audience. Starting this year, Wallex, a global financial technology company, will be taking over and proudly representing the prestigious competition. This alliance creates a unique partnership for the event and the future of surfing.

Wallex coming in as the new sponsor creates a feeling of enthusiasm as the company is young and growing and has dedicated itself to creating the best competition for surfers and fans. With much emphasis on creating the best environment for surfers, fans, and spectators, they also want to focus on particular elements that can positively impact the competition itself. With their technological advancements and dedication to constantly growing, Wallex’s approach will ultimately transform the US Open into an unforgettable and inclusive experience.

The announcement of Wallex becoming the new official sponsor of the competition has allowed a new era to begin within the world of surfing. Through this sponsorship, the surfing community has seen that their advanced technology, passion for innovation, and commitment to their athletes will allow this year’s US Open to flourish. This action-packed competition will become even more interactive, and with Wallex at the forefront, this year’s US Open will impact surfing for many years to come.

US Open of Surfing

New Opportunities for the Fans

As more and more fans become involved with the sport, additional opportunities have opened up for the WSL. Instead of having everyone stand on the beach, the league decided to create a more fan and family-focused environment. Many historic and new sponsors will have the chance to interact with the world of surfing as the fans will have an opportunity to be up close and personal with the action. This change will create a new and improved feel to the event and will allow fans to have more options and engagement with the events over the week-long event.

Fans are one of, if not the most important, elements to consider when creating a competition/event. The WSL and Wallex have accounted for this, and have taken significant action to ensure fans have the best game-day experience. The league announced that they will be holding a festival-style setup featuring many new and upcoming sponsors, as well as those who have represented Huntington Beach over the years. With the addition of food trucks, athlete signings, beach activities, and more, they want everyone attending the competition to have anything they desire. The idea of creating a festival setup for this competition will allow fans the opportunity not just to watch, but interact with new businesses, sponsors, and ultimately, people who make a huge impact on the surfing world. The WSL and Wallex realize how much history goes into this event and wouldn’t want to do anything to take away from that.

The sport of surfing continuously grows in skill, known as one of the most extreme sports on the planet. The WSL has decided to step it up and add to the extremeness by including the Nitro Circus, known for its daring motocross tricks and stunts. The Nitro Circus event will be a freestyle competition and will take place right on the beach. With their gravity-defying tricks and jaw-dropping feats, the Nitro Circus athletes push the boundaries of what is possible, showcasing their incredible skills and fearlessness. The synergies between the two sports will create an even more extreme sports environment as fans can watch two of the most entertaining and niche-oriented sports in the world at the same time and place. Together, this collaboration will create an electrifying performance that will leave the audience admiring all of the athletes’ abilities, and creating memories of a lifetime.

All of these new and improved additions are being made to fit the needs of all fans and spectators, whether you’re a long-time surf fan or just getting into the sport. This fresh approach will allow fans and spectators an opportunity to involve themselves with the surf community in one of the most historic sites.

Leaving A Lasting Impact

The US Open has been around for quite some time and surfers coming from all over the world, the pressure is on and everyone can feel it. At the end of the six days of events, 80 men and 48 women will have to rack up as many points as possible to compete and qualify for only a few spots. Making it into the men’s top 10 and women’s top 5 will give surfers an edge, as this competition is the perfect place for surfers to gain an advantage over their competitors. These intense days leave fans and spectators in awe, and the new sponsor wants this event to impact how surfing competitions will be conducted and viewed.

The WSL and Wallex saw an opportunity to combine their skills and assets to create a new and improved US Open, one that caters not only to athletes, but also to the dedicated fans. The addition of the new festival-style setup, sponsors, the Nitro Cross event, and more, has allowed fans and spectators to experience a surfing event in a completely new way. The combination of the action sport and the pioneering technology, the Wallex US Open of Surfing will allow for a remarkable encounter that will blend the energy from the tournament with the connectivity and effectiveness that Wallex provides. It was clear when this alliance was formed that both wanted to create an environment for the fans that was family-friendly, action-packed, and community-based. By focusing on and implementing all three of these elements into the event, they hope that all surfing competitions can use the US Open as an example to follow.

Following the lead of the Wallex US Open of Surfing will ultimately give other competitions and events an example of how to create a more holistic event experience. This is important for the evolution of the sport because as surfing continues to grow, the fan experience becomes vital and each competition will need to make sure they cater to their base in order to attract new fans. In the coming weeks, get ready to watch the best surfers in the world ride the waves that might get them to the top of the rankings, while having so many opportunities at your fingertips.

Team Ownership: Lessons from Wrexham

In February of 2021, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny shocked the world with their purchase of Wrexham’s soccer club. What did two American actors know about English football, and why did they want a stake in a dying, fifth-tier club? Two years later, their move appears more strategic and genuine than ever. Wrexham has since moved into the English Football League, its revitalized community is thriving, and there’s even a binge-worthy FX docuseries in the mix. McElhenny and Reynolds’ decisions exemplify how, when done right, team ownership can enhance a sports community and restore faith in a neglected club. The impact has undoubtedly had a ripple effect, leading to a recent surge in celebrity owners who hope to achieve similar results.

Authentic Interest

Part of McElhenny and Reynolds’ draw to Wrexham was the club’s ability to earn a “promotion,” which presented a much more dynamic structure than most American sports leagues. For example, Wrexham’s season in the National League is 44 games. Each team in the league earns three points for a win, one for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins promotion into the higher-tier English Football League. As potential new owners, McElhenny and Reynolds identified this promotion as their primary goal.

Before McElhenney and Reynolds acquired ownership of the club, they went to great lengths to express this goal and to demonstrate how their commitment extended far beyond financial gains.  Wrexham’s club had been under fan ownership since 2011, which meant that their takeover required the approval of over 2,000 members of the Club Trust. During their presentation to the Trust, Reynolds emphasized their mission statement to transform Wrexham into a global powerhouse and to “become a part of the Wrexham story” rather than the other way around. Following the meeting, an overwhelming 98% of the members voted in favor of the sale, acknowledging the actors’ deep respect for the club’s history and their recognition of Wrexham AFC’s significance as a pillar of the community.

Team Ownership: Wrexham

First Steps

Even with the takeover incomplete, McElhenny and Reynolds invested money into Wrexham. They contributed to Wrexham’s Transfer Fund to help strengthen the squad roster in the upcoming season. As a result of their efforts, the team was able to secure better players and was one step closer to being a competitive force in the league.

Once the takeover was finalized, Wrexham’s new owners continued taking steps to garner community support. American owners of British clubs have historically had an uphill battle in this arena. Consider the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United: while their wealth and business acumen were highly regarded, their limited understanding of the British football community left fans feeling disdainful. If American outsiders Reynolds and McElhenny wanted to give the club comeback, they’d have to give the community one, too. With Wrexham’s nearby Queensway area ranked by the Welsh government as the third-most impoverished neighborhood in the country, the two had their work cut out for them.

The new owners recognized the club as a lifeblood for the town both financially and emotionally. McElhenny made his reverence clear, explaining that Wrexham players are “playing for their lives . . . You can see the passion. They’re playing with every last drop of their blood.”  Both actors approached team ownership by balancing the town of Wrexham’s perspective and their own business expertise. They rallied around local businesses like Turf Pub, bought homes in the area to remain hands-on, and polled the community to supplement where their knowledge lacked and maintain integrity with the fans. Hiring top-tier head coach Phil Parkinson and high-ranking MLS soccer exec Fleur Robinson, they enlisted industry giants to make critical decisions. Wrexham’s stadium, Racehorse Grounds, underwent major renovations and grounds replacement through millions in investment money, elevating the overall onsite experience. In addition, they increased the budget for player salaries to bring on top players like striker Paul Mullin. In response, season ticket sales tripled and average game attendance rose to almost 10,000. In 2023– just two years into new ownership–  the team achieved promotion to the English Football League.

Welcome to Wrexham

Along the way, Reynolds and McElhenny documented their endeavor in a wildly successful FX series, Welcome to Wrexham. Instead of focusing solely on their journey as team owners, the actors used the show as an opportunity to humanize the town and tell its stories. Considering Wrexham’s football club is rich with a 150-year-old history and deeply engrained in the town’s culture, its impact on the community is overwhelming. In the series, a citizen’s voice-over encapsulates the draw of Wrexham AFC, explaining: “Wrexham is a town that battles against odds constantly. It really is a place where people deserve a little bit more than they’ve got out of life. But the thing we love more than anything is the football club.”

From celebratory shots at the local pub to highlights of players’ stories, the show captures the essence of Wrexham football’s unifying power. Thanks to the documentary, audiences worldwide fell in love with Wrexham’s comeback story and the unlikely passion and conviction of two American outsiders. Tourism has increased alongside the show’s exposure as U.S. fans flock to the small town to experience the excitement in person.

Team Ownership: Wrexham

The Ripple Effect

As a result of Reynolds and McElhenny’s ownership, other celebrities have followed suit with teams of their own. Joining the National Women’s Soccer League, Natalie Portman’s female-led Angel City Football Club debuted in Los Angeles just last year. The team is backed by a roster of sports figures including Billie Jean King, Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, and Serena Williams. Just as Reynolds and McElhenny have done at Wrexham, Portman’s group made player pay and authenticity a priority. They recently signed Christen Press with a $700K 3-year contract, making her the highest-paid player in the league. The group hopes to use the team as a way to elevate women’s sports, support pay equity, and invest in the greater Los Angeles community.

As Wrexham lives out its promotion dreams next season, it will be interesting to see McElhenny and Reynolds’ continued oversight and the growth that ensues. New and veteran team owners alike should take note of how these two unlikely figures have transformed Wrexham. Their enthusiasm and devotion is palpable, and it’s secured a win for both the club and its surrounding community.
